Stewin Bernal Flick is from Barranquilla, Colombia. He graduated from ÚNICA, university in Bogotá; and he has a Bachelor Degree in Bilingual Education. Also, he has always been passionate about teaching and guiding kids through inquiry and exploration. Stewin currently teaches fifth grade at International Spanish Language Academy. As an IBEN member, he has led International Baccalaureate workshops to help helping other schools with their IB journeys. Also, he has had the opportunity to work as a PLC facilitator helping teachers strengthen their Spanish immersion teaching skills. Some of his interests include playing volleyball, going for walks, traveling, learning languages, and drinking coffee. A lifelong learner, Stewin is currently developing proficiency in ASL and Portuguese.

We want to empower educators to create learning experiences through the IB principles of inclusion. Three takeaways from this workshop are understanding the principles of an inclusive environment, exploring ways to reduce or remove barriers to learning, and the use of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) as a tool to collaborate in the creation of inclusive and equitable learning experiences.

Sarah Devers began her teaching career at a bilingual IB World School in Reñaca, Chile. Sarah taught 5-12 grade English and Spanish language before joining the world of dual-language/immersion education at International Spanish Language Academy. Her experience in the IB PYP has led her to develop a keen understanding of transdisciplinary teaching and curriculum design that provides students with authentic and engaging learning experiences. As ISLA’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction and IB Coordinator, Sarah is passionate about approaching teacher development with values rooted in the International Baccalaureate’s mission to create a better world through education. Through her own curiosities and love of language, she enjoys modeling what it means to be a lifelong learner. Most recently, Sarah has fallen in love with phenomena in the natural world and the study of endangered languages.

I love teaching beginning French at Hopkins West Middle School, an IB school that just completed its third successful IB review. Through my career I have been extremely fortunate to work with some extraordinary teachers. From these collaborations, from my background as an AVID teacher and coordinator, from serving as a mentor teacher, and from years of classroom teaching, I have gathered a wealth of helpful and practical ideas about how to make IB language classes engaging, challenging, and welcoming for middle school students. I have a B.A. in French and Latin with secondary teaching certification from the University of North Dakota and an M.A. in French literature from the University of Minnesota.

The transition to an IB school poses some unique challenges and opportunities for language acquisition teachers. When a subject that has been formerly considered an elective becomes a required part of the core curriculum, language teachers sometimes wonder how to make class fun and accessible to all, yet appropriately challenging. This session will offer some concrete techniques to create a welcoming space for all learners. Ideas will include examples of proven effective ideas for classroom set-up, routines, differentiated IB assessments, games, and culturally relevant pedagogy where students feel connected to their studies and to the classroom community.

Lindsay Kehl is a School Counselor and educational consultant with over 18 years of experience in IB schools worldwide, including in Romania, India, Zambia, and Panama. She is passionate about supporting the academic, emotional, and social development of students, particularly in the unique context of the IB framework. Having attended an IB high school in St. Paul, Lindsay has firsthand experience of the program's transformative impact. She is dedicated to helping schools cultivate inclusive, supportive communities where students can thrive academically and personally.
